During World War II, Miriam's parents make a hard decision. They send her out to the country to live with another family. You see, Miriam's family is Jewish and her parents send her to another family to protect her and hide her. The new family is wonderful and they give her a pet rabbit to comfort her. One day some soldiers come and Lily and her rabbit, Hendrick, have to hide in the lily cupboard until the soldiers go away.
This book is a good introduction to the Holocaust and how some people helped the Jews during the war. It would be a good jumping off point for discussions and even predictions about what might have happened to Lily after this particular episode. Did she have to hide in the lily cupboard often? What happened to her mother and father during the war? Did she ever see them again?
