Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt

Did I just finish reading the 2012 Newbery Award winner?  Many of the mock Newbery blogs and discussions think this one may be it.  The story is about Doug who struggles with moving to a new town and functioning in a dysfunctional family.  Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War and the hope of the Apollo 11 mission Doug's story is quite powerful.  The author uses paintings by James Audubon as metaphors to Doug's life and experiences.  I really enjoyed this book...the voice of Doug is particularly effective.
