A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park

This book is based on the true story of Salva Dut who escaped his village in Sudan when he was a young boy.  For years he walked through Sudan, Ethiopia, and Kenya to escape the war going on and to live in refugee camps.  Eventually, this Lost Boy was sent to live in Rochester, NY.  As an adult he has formed a corporation that goes back to Sudan and digs wells for villages there.  The story was very gripping.  The narration went back and forth between Salva as a boy and a girl named Nya who had to travel back and forth every day in order to get water for her family.  Eventually the two stories connect.  Because of my experience in Guatemala and a village there that does not have any water this story hit home for me.  It is a short read and one you should check out for the Maine Student Book Award.
