It is true that you can't judge a book by its cover. The cover of this book did nothing for me (I get it now, but it's not visually appealing really). The only reason I read this book was because it won the Newbery. Once I started I could barely put it down. The book is set in the late 1970s and on the surface it is a realistic fiction book about Miranda, her troubles with her friends, her single mom, who wants to get on the $20,000 Pyramid, and her mom's boyfriend. Things get weird when she starts receiving strange notes and is told to write a letter. She (and hopefully the reader) don't really figure out things until the end of the book. It was actually quite clever. It reminded me a lot of The Power of Un (which you should read if you haven't). I will say that the allusions to A Wrinkle in Time add a lot to the ultimate ending of the story. Don't judge this by its cover...check it out!!
