I am not a big fan of non-fiction. Sorry. I really picked this up because I want to read all of the Maine Student Book Awards and this one was relatively short. That being said, I did find that this book was a good read. It tells the true story of Gail Halvorsen, a pilot during the Berlin airlifts after WW II. After visiting Berlin and seeing the children he decided to add gum, candy, and chocolate to the drops in order to boost morale. What followed was a successful campaign which brought worldwide attention to the situation in Berlin. Included in the story are events that happened after those years and how Gail Halvorsen has continued to stay in touch with the families in Berlin and how he has stayed involved in world aid.
