I just had a literature group read The Great Fire by Jim Murphy so I thought this would be a great fiction book to pair with it. The story was quite good. It focused on an orphan Poppy who has been trained as a pickpocket and Justin who is the son of a wealthy jeweler. Justin's family takes in Poppy but when mistake is made at the store she is the one blamed. All of these events are set in the week proceeding the Chicago Fire and culminate the night of the fire. The author weaves in some great historical facts in the book including a recent theory about a comet and meteor shower that was not mentioned in Jim Murphy's book.
