In 1938 Edith is sent to Chicago in America to live with her uncle. Her sister, Bette, had been sent the year before and was also living in Chicago with a foster family. Her family was Jewish and were afraid of the rise of Hitler and the threat of war. This book explores Edith's first few years in America and how she learns to adjust to the culture. This story is based on the experiences of her mother. I wish the story had gone farther in telling what else happened to Edith. It was a good story about the experiences of children who were separated from their parents in order to be protected from the Holocaust.
