Small as an Elephant by Jennifer Richard Jacobson

This book was fabulous.  Of course, being set in Maine, in places I have been to, made it even better.  Eleven year old Jack is staying on Mt. Desert Island with his mom when she disappears.  As the story progresses the reader discovers that this is not the first time that this has happened.  Jack is afraid to get help because he is afraid he will be taken away from his mother.  Driven by his love of elephants Jack eventually determines to travel to York Wild Animal Park to see Lydia, the only elephant in Maine.  The story is heartbreaking as the reader connects to Jack and his dilemma and yet it is full of hope as well.
